Acellular pertussis vaccination facilitates Bordetella parapertussis infection in a rodent model of bordetellosis.
Despite over 50 years of population-wide vaccination, whooping cough incidence is on the rise. Although Bordetella pertussis is considered the main causative agent of whooping cough in humans, Bordetella parapertussis infections are not uncommon. The widely used acellular whooping cough vaccines (aP) are comprised solely of B. pertussis antigens that hold little or no efficacy against B. parape...

The 3 major Bordetella species--namely, B. pertussis, B. parapertussis, and B. bronchiseptica--can be distinguished by their different host ranges. B. bronchiseptica infects a wide range of mammals (including humans), whereas B. pertussis infects only humans and, under experimental conditions, mice and pigs. In contrast, B. parapertussis, also a causative agent of pertussis, displays a unique h...
متن کاملPolymorphism of repeated regions of pertactin in Bordetella pertussis, Bordetella parapertussis, and Bordetella bronchiseptica.
Pertactin is an outer membrane protein expressed by Bordetella pertussis, Bordetella parapertussis, and Bordetella bronchiseptica that induces protective immunity to Bordetella infections. The immunodominant and immunoprotective epitopes of pertactin include two repeated regions, I and II. Comparison of these two repeated regions showed that B. parapertussis pertactin is invariant, whereas B. p...
متن کاملAcellular pertussis vaccines and complement killing of Bordetella pertussis.
Antibody-dependent complement killing of Bordetella pertussis after immunization with a three-component acellular pertussis vaccine was characterized. Postimmunization activity was unchanged for about half of the adult vaccine recipients. The responses of the other individuals were complex, with evidence of both beneficial and antagonistic responses occurring, sometimes in the same individual.
